Looking for a Dyson Battery Screwdriver? Get the Correct One.

$

We are often asked on these pages for a Dyson battery screwdriver.

Or more correctly, which is the correct screwdriver to use to remove a Dyson battery.

Confusion arises because most screws on your Dyson are Torx screws like this.

Dyson Torx screw

For those screws, you use the Torx screwdrivers discussed in >this article< here.

But as Dyson like to confuse you, the one screw on a Dyson cordless that isn’t a Torx looks like this.

Dyson battery screw

And that’s what they use on the battery.

All Dyson cordless models use the same battery screw. So it doesn’t matter if you have a DC35, DC44, DC59, V6, V7, V8, V10, V11 or a V15, it’s the same screw to swap over the battery.

That’s called a Pozidriv screw, which isn’t to be confused with a similar-looking Phillips screw on the left below.

Dyson battery screwdriver

To prevent slippage and damaging of screws, you should only use a Phillips head screwdriver on a Phillips head screw, and you should only use a Pozidriv screwdriver on a Pozidriv screw.

Pozidriv screwdrivers come in a variety of sizes as well, so let’s just cut to the chase here and get you fixed up with a Dyson battery screwdriver.

The screwdriver you want to remove Dyson batteries is this one.

Dyson V6 battery screwdriver

With this specific tip.

And here’s where to get one from:

You can get one on eBay >here<

You can get one on Amazon >here<

You can get one from Manchester Vacs >here<

They’re not expensive and you will encounter other things around the home that use that specific screw, so it’s a handy addition to any home toolbox. And a must-have for the Dyson trade. So that’s where you get a Dyson battery screwdriver from.

Where to buy a Replacement DC04, DC14 or DC24 Dyson Power Cord in the UK

$

If you are looking to replace the power cord on a Dyson DC04, DC14 or the DC24 then read this before you buy something cheap and nasty from Amazon or eBay (if you want a cable for a later Dyson, read >this article< instead).

Buying a replacement Dyson flex (or cable, lead, wire or cord if you prefer) is often a bit of a minefield.

Early Dyson models used to use a pale grey 0.75 mm flex. Often these used to fail where they entered the machine because they weren’t heavy-duty enough.

Later Dyson models used a thicker dark grey 1 mm flex which is considerably more durable.

The terminals on the end of the flexes varied across many Dyson models, and many of the later Dysons had varying different lengths of flexes fitted to them.

This has always created a little bit of a headache for those in the aftermarket and Dyson repairers. Because, for example, if you use a cable designed to fit a DC14 it often won’t wrap correctly on a machine such as the DC07.

Original Dyson cables are rather expensive, so naturally many people seek a good aftermarket replacement.

However, the problem with this is that most of the aftermarket tend to source Chinese products as cheap as they possibly can to meet the lowest retail price point they can.

But not everyone wants Lidl and Aldi do they? Some people prefer Waitrose or Marks and Spencer, right?

Most aftermarket flexes are 0.75 mm finished in a cheap-looking pale grey and shorter than you’d prefer. When fitted to a late model Dyson, these tend to look as cheap and nasty as they are. Many have the wrong spades on the end, badly crimped ones or no spades at all.

Cheap Dyson Power Cord

It’s often hard to tell the difference between colour shades, good quality and a bad quality cable when looking at online listings, and by the time it prematurely fails, the window for return will have long passed anyway.

Dyson has always fitted nice little cable tidy clips to their original cables and most of the aftermarket don’t bother to supply these on their cables. Why? Because it adds a few pence to the production cost.

You can swap the cable clip over from your old one, but they are often fiddly and sometimes break.

923255-01

Imagine if you could buy a good quality 1.00 mm replacement aftermarket Dyson cable? Imagine if it was in the correct dark grey, with the correct terminals on the end and a nice little cable tidy clip already fitted? It may even come in a cardboard box so that isn’t yet more plastic to kill the marine life in our oceans.

And now somebody has – here it is:

Totally plug and play and pretty much indiscernible from the original. Apart from being longer than most at 10.9m.

How To Service & Change the Filter on Your Dyson Airblade Hand Dryer

$
0
0

This relates to plastic-bodied Dyson hand dryers with model number ABXX, for example, AB03, AB14, etc.

Metal bodied AB01 hand dryers take the same filter but you must remove the full front cover to replace it.

First the good news, the only service work you need to do on this type of hand dryer is to change the filter periodically and keep the four sensor lenses (where you put your hands in) clean.

It is good practice to change the filter once a year. A blocked filter restricts the airflow to the hand dryer and causes the motor to overheat and the PCB in the motor bucket to fail.

You can buy the filters >>here<< singly and >>here<< in 10s.

Your hand dryer looks like this:

The filter is located at the bottom of the machine under the door with a vent in.

There are two screws at the back of that vented door. One on each side.

They are anti-tamper Torx T30 heads. You can buy the spanner to undo them >>here<< in case of need.

The filter can be stuck in and might require a pull to remove.

Time to refit the new filter. It goes in foam side towards you, with the long protrusion side first, and the small protrusion snaps into the little lever.

There it is in place. Refit the door – it locates at the front first – with the two screws, don’t overtighten them, and that’s all there is to it.

What About that Other Hoover Repair Shop?

There are other shops around that offer Dyson repairs in Manchester. Some are also hardware shops and other types of little appliance shops.

Manchester Vacs differ from the average local small shop. You’ve heard the phrase “Jack of all trades – master of none” probably.  They are not a place that repairs anything and everything. They won’t fix your microwave.  They won’t fix your pressure washer. They even prefer not to fix Hoover, Miele or Vax given a choice. They won’t sell you an air fryer, a steam iron or cut you a new back door key either. They’re Dyson vacuum specialists.

The only other thing Manchester Vacs will repair is Sebo vacuums as they’re the main dealer for Sebo in Manchester. So if you happen to be looking for Sebo repairs in Manchester, they do that too.

They don’t need to get into lengthy investigations at your expense to find a fault or wait a week for a spare part like small shops often do. Their engineers have seen it all. They’ve fixed literally thousands of Dysons.

A quote is always free. There’s a minimum charge of £20 for small jobs. As an example, a typical power cord replacement costs £35 all in. Typical labour charges for other repairs are in the region of £35-49 depending on the repair. Any extra parts required would be on top. As Dyson parts specialists, their parts prices are always competitive. They supply the trade with spare parts too.

How to Fit and Where to Buy a Dyson DC25 Yoke Loom

$

If there is no power coming to the cleaner head on your Dyson DC25, the yoke loom is the likely culprit.

You will test the two terminals coming from the machine towards the cleaner head, if there is no power there, the culprit can sometimes be the reset switch, but more often than not, it’s a broken yoke loom.

The break isn’t always visible as you see below. Sometimes the break is internal, so you would test the wire for continuity while flexing it with your test meter.

You’ll need a Torx T15 screwdriver to do this job.

Here is where they break.

Dyson DC25 no power to cleaner head

Having established that the loom is at fault, many people would seek to just repair it by patching a piece of wire in or repairing the break.

You can try to repair them, but they tend to fail again shortly afterward because the repaired ones won’t flex correctly and the flexing in use will break the repair. Better to replace this little loom and do the job properly.

Dyson used to supply this with the carrier (part number 916190-01).

916190-01

However, they discontinued it some time ago. They don’t like you fixing things.

As is usual in such cases, the aftermarket comes to the rescue and makes the part available again. That has now happened, and Manchester Vacs have manufactured these looms. Here’s what they look like.

Dyson DC25 yoke loom

To keep the price down, and reduce plastic waste, they have been manufactured without the original plastic carrier. You can easily reuse that if you know how.

How to Fit and Where to Buy a Dyson DC25 Yoke Loom

The wire only clips into a channel, and while the terminals can be a little fiddly to insert into the plastic holder, it’s not terribly hard if someone shows you how.

So let’s show you how. Here is MV’s fitting instruction video:

There’s no need to pay upwards of £15 anymore either as you did with the original Dyson part 916190-01. This loom will cost you about £7-£8 including delivery in the UK, and here are your buying links:

  • On the MV site >>here<<. Select economy delivery as default is more expensive next day.
  • On eBay >>here<<
  • On Amazon >>here<<

If you’re in the Dyson repair trade, you can buy them from the MV trade page >>here<< in 10s.

If you spend more than £30 on items from that page, delivery is free.

There are all sorts for the repair trade there: power cords, adaptors, DC40 and DC41 cyclone clips, V10/11 triggers, chargers, Torx screwdrivers, multimeters, and even more random stuff like Russian barbecue skewers, speed camera signs, and old police truncheons.

It’s not hard to spend thirty quid to be able to select free delivery. And you get a VAT receipt.

Where to buy a Dyson Airwrap cable in the UK

At the time of writing, Dyson doesn’t supply replacement Airwrap cables to the public or the trade.

We expect their reasoning for that to be that they designed the Airwrap with a built-in cable that is not intended to be replaceable by the user. In this case, if the cable becomes damaged or faulty, the entire device might need to be replaced or repaired by Dyson directly under warranty terms.

If your Airwrap needs a new flex and it is still under warranty, then contact Dyson and they will probably fix it.

However, if your device is out of warranty, or you are in the appliance repair trade, you will want to buy a Dyson Airwap cable.

Here’s what they look like.

When an OEM chooses not to make spare parts available – whatever the reason – it usually doesn’t take the aftermarket long to respond.

Where to buy a Dyson Airwrap cable in the UK

When an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) chooses not to make spare parts available for a product, the appliance spares aftermarket often step in to fill the gap and provide alternative solutions for consumers. The appliance spares aftermarket refers to a secondary market where third-party manufacturers or distributors produce and supply spare parts for various appliances and devices. Here’s how it fills the void left by OEMs:

  • Aftermarket spare parts manufacturers specialise in reverse engineering or sourcing components to replicate or replace the original parts. They invest in research and development to understand the specifications and design of the original parts, allowing them to produce compatible replacements.
  • The appliance spares aftermarket offers a diverse range of spare parts that can cater to various models and brands. This allows consumers to find suitable replacements for their appliances, even if the OEM no longer supplies the parts, or as in this case, chooses not to. The aftermarket may also provide improved versions or upgraded components that can enhance the performance or longevity of the appliance.
  • In many cases, aftermarket spare parts are available at a lower cost compared to the OEM’s offerings. The competition within the aftermarket drives prices down, making spare parts more affordable for consumers. This affordability can be particularly beneficial when the OEM’s replacement parts are expensive or difficult to obtain.
  • The appliance spares aftermarket often focuses on ensuring the availability and accessibility of spare parts. They maintain inventories of commonly required parts, ensuring quick availability when customers need them. Online platforms and local distributors make it easier for consumers to access these parts and have them delivered or purchased conveniently.
  • The appliance spares aftermarket often fosters a community of repair enthusiasts and do-it-yourself (DIY) enthusiasts who are skilled in repairing appliances. They provide guidance, tutorials, and forums where people can seek advice on repairing their appliances using aftermarket spare parts. This community support encourages appliance repair and extends the lifespan of products.

Buy a replacement Dyson Airwrap power cord

The UK government has recognised the importance of promoting a “right to repair” and reducing electronic waste. In July 2021, the UK announced plans to introduce new legislation that would require manufacturers to make spare parts available for certain household appliances. The proposed legislation aims to extend the lifespan of products, promote repairability, and reduce electronic waste.

However, these “plans” have yet to materialise in any robust form, so if you want to buy a Dyson Airwap cable (or flex, lead, wire or power cord as you may call it), at the time of writing, you can only buy aftermarket.

It’s important to note that while the appliance spares aftermarket can be a reliable source for spare parts, there can be variations in quality and compatibility among different suppliers. Consumers should research reputable aftermarket suppliers, read reviews, and ensure the compatibility of the spare parts with their specific appliances before making a purchase. Parts sourced in the UK from Dyson specialists are likely to be far better than random spares sourced on eBay, Amazon, or the Chinese Alibaba.

If you are in the appliance repair trade, you can also buy them in tens at a discount from them here: 10x Replacement Power Cords for the Dyson Airwrap

They also sell them on Amazon and eBay, but you will pay more there, as with anything. Why? By selling directly through their own website, retailers can bypass the circa 20% selling fees associated with online marketplaces, allowing them to offer lower prices to customers. In other words, the 18-20% that the online marketplaces would charge is passed on to you in the form of a discount.

More and more Dyson Airwraps are becoming available used now, or being replaced when out of warranty, so they are coming into the radar for the refurbished appliance trade and repairers. So it’s nice to know you can get replacement Dyson Airwrap cables already.

Where to Buy a Replacement Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer Cable in the UK

$

Where to buy a replacement Dyson hair dryer power cord (cable, flex, wire, or lead if you prefer) in the UK.

Dyson hair dryer power cords are often subject to bending, twisting, and pulling, especially near the point where they enter the appliance. Over time, these repeated movements can cause the wires inside the cord to break or fray, leading to failure. You’ll not be able to see the break from outside.

This exhibits itself as no power or intermittent power to the hairdryer. It’s a known wear and tear issue with many appliances, not just Dyson hair dryers.

If you slowly wiggle and twist the wire where it goes into the Dyson hair dryer, and you get a momentary burst of power, the power cord is at fault and you need to replace it.

Here’s what they look like.

Where to Buy a Replacement Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer Cable in the UK

Not to be confused with Dyson Airwap flexes – read about those here instead: Where to buy a Dyson Airwrap cable in the UK

Dyson won’t sell you a replacement hair dryer flex. When an OEM chooses not to make spare parts available – whatever the reason – it usually doesn’t take the aftermarket long to respond. As has happened with Supersonic hair dryer flexes.

Dyson hair dryers often find their way into the second-hand market once they are out of warranty for various reasons. Some people may upgrade their appliances for newer models and dispose of the old ones. Large retailers get many returns and they pass through specialist dealers and end up on the second-hand market.

The secondary market that specialises in the repair and refurbishment of Dyson appliances plays a vital role in extending the lifespan of these products. Specialised repair centres and technicians offer a range of services to address common issues that Dyson appliances may encounter, such as motor malfunctions, suction problems, or broken components. These experts possess in-depth knowledge of Dyson technology and have access to genuine and aftermarket spare parts, enabling them to diagnose and rectify issues effectively.

By providing repair and refurbishment services, the secondary market helps customers save money by avoiding the need to purchase new appliances. It also promotes sustainability by reducing electronic waste and supporting the circular economy. The availability of these repair services ensures that Dyson appliances can continue to serve their owners for years to come.

Replacement Dyson hair dryer flex lead cable

If you are in the Dyson repair trade or a capable DIYer, you’ll want to avoid buying cheap Chinese Dyson flexes from outlets such as eBay and Amazon.

Buyers may choose to avoid Chinese sellers on platforms like eBay and Amazon for a variety of reasons, including concerns about slow shipping times and poor quality products that do not meet specifications. One of the main factors contributing to these concerns is the distance between the seller in China and the buyer in another country, which can result in longer shipping times compared to local or regional sellers. This can be a disadvantage for buyers who require faster delivery or have time-sensitive needs.

There is a perception among some buyers that the overall quality control and consistency of products from Chinese sellers may be lower compared to sellers from the UK. To mitigate these risks, buyers may opt to purchase from sellers in their own country or sellers with a proven track record of reliable shipping and quality products. In other words, buy your replacement Dyson hair dryer power cords from a reputable UK seller.

Where to Buy a Replacement Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer Cable in the UK

Dyson hair dryer flex fitting note: It’s worth mentioning that early Dyson hair dryers had larger spade connectors than later ones, and all manufacturers at the time of writing only make the later ones. You can re-terminate the end of the new flex if you like. What we do is grind or file the male spade on the hairdryer down a bit to fit the new flex. The caveat here is modifying a larger male electrical spade terminal to fit a smaller female connector involves grinding or filing down the terminal gradually, testing the fit periodically, and smoothing any rough edges. So do it carefully.

So, where to buy a replacement Dyson hair dryer power cord from a reputable UK supplier?

You can buy them individually from Dyson spares specialist Manchester Vacs here: Replacement Power Cord for Dyson Hair Dryers

If you are in the trade, you can buy them in 10s from their trade page here: 10x Replacement Power Cords for Dyson Hair Dryers

They also sell them individually on Amazon and eBay, but why would you shop there instead?

Shopping on a retailer’s own website rather than buying from them via Amazon or eBay can save you money as the platform seller fees (usually circa 20%) are not being passed along to you. Purchasing directly from the retailer’s website can potentially lead to better pricing, trade discounts, or enhanced customer service. Additionally, shopping on the retailer’s website often provides access to their full range of products, repair resources, and how-to videos. By choosing to buy directly, customers are not helping Jeff buy a new spaceship either.

Where to Buy Good-Quality Dyson V7 and V8 Batteries

$
0
0

When it comes to household appliances, Dyson stands out for its innovation and quality, especially with its revolutionary vacuum cleaners. However, Dyson owners often encounter challenges when it comes to replacing Dyson batteries, particularly for popular models like the V7 and V8.

Genuine Dyson batteries (part number 968670-02 for V7 and 967834-07 for V8) are known for their reliability but come with a significant price tag, prompting many consumers to explore aftermarket alternatives. While the market offers numerous options, it’s essential to tread carefully to avoid issues such as poor quality and safety concerns.

Exploring Aftermarket Alternatives: Genuine Dyson batteries are undoubtedly reliable, but their premium cost can deter budget-conscious consumers. As a result, aftermarket alternatives have gained popularity as more affordable options. These batteries are typically manufactured by third-party companies and designed to be compatible with Dyson models. While they can significantly reduce costs, the quality may vary. Not all aftermarket batteries offer the same level of performance and safety as genuine Dyson ones, so caution is warranted when making a choice.

Genuine Dyson V7 battery

Risks of Online Marketplaces: Platforms like eBay and Amazon are convenient hubs for purchasing aftermarket Dyson batteries due to their vast selection and ease of use. However, a significant portion of batteries available on these platforms originate from Chinese manufacturers (who often pay no VAT) and may suffer from quality issues. Reports of poor performance, premature failure, and safety hazards such as overheating or fire risk are not uncommon. Moreover, sellers on these platforms face very high seller fees, which are passed on to you and make for compromises in product quality to meet competitive price points.

Genuine Dyson V8 battery

Benefits of Specialised Dyson Retailers: Opting to purchase batteries from specialised Dyson retailers can offer a more reliable solution. Retailers like Manchester Vacs have built a reputation for their commitment to sourcing high-quality items. Unlike large online marketplaces, these retailers often have direct relationships with manufacturers or suppliers, ensuring better control over product quality. Furthermore, by purchasing directly from their websites, consumers can avoid the hidden fees associated with platforms like Amazon and eBay, meaning better value for money.

Buy Dyson V7 battery

Understanding Battery Specifications: When selecting a replacement battery, it’s essential to consider factors beyond just capacity. Milliampere-hour (mAh) is a measure of a battery’s capacity, indicating how much charge it can store. However, higher mAh doesn’t always equate to better performance or run time, as the quality of the battery cells is equally crucial.

Unscrupulous Chinese sellers (or UK sellers who sell cheap Chinese batteries) often fake or exaggerate mAh ratings, claiming figures like 5000mAh, 6000mAh, and sometimes more when the actual capacity is much lower. Many make spurious claims like “Sony cells” when in fact what is inside is no such thing. How can you check? You can’t.

A reliable battery with 3000-4000mAh from reputable sources meets the original specifications of Dyson batteries and provides sufficient power for optimal performance.

Buy Dyson V8 battery

Finding a reliable replacement battery for Dyson V7 and V8 models requires careful consideration and research. While aftermarket options offer cost savings, they may come with compromises in quality and safety. Opting for specialised Dyson retailers like Manchester Vacs can assure better quality and reliability. By understanding battery specifications and avoiding exaggerated claims, consumers can make informed decisions to ensure optimal performance and safety for their Dyson vacuum cleaners.

For trustworthy replacement batteries for Dyson V7 and V8 models, consider exploring Manchester Vacs’ selection:

How to Make Replacement Dyson Hairdryer Power Cords Fit Your HD01 Model

$

If you’ve found yourself in a predicament where your replacement Dyson hairdryer power cord, flex or lead doesn’t quite fit your HD01 model as expected, you’re not alone. Many users encounter this issue, leading to frustration and confusion.

However, fear not, as there’s a straightforward workaround that can save you from returning the cord or complaining to sellers. In this article, we’ll guide you through the process of adapting the replacement cord to suit your HD01 model.

Understanding the Compatibility Issue

The root of the problem lies in the slight differences between the HD01 model and the later Dyson hairdryer models. While most Dyson hairdryers use the same flex for their power cords, the early HD01 models have a unique configuration that requires some adjustments to accommodate replacement cords seamlessly.

How to Make Replacement Dyson Hairdryer Power Cords Fit Your HD01 Model

Modifications Needed

Upon closer inspection, you’ll notice that the HD01 models have the live and neutral wires oriented differently compared to later models. Additionally, the spade sizes might not align with those of the replacement cord. However, these discrepancies are not insurmountable hurdles.

Solution: Re-termination or Modification

To address the compatibility issue, you have two options. The first involves re-terminating the new flex with the spades from your old cord. This process is relatively simple and requires basic electrical skills. Alternatively, if you prefer not to tinker with the wiring, you can opt to file down the male spades on the hairdryer to match the connectors of the replacement cord. Both methods achieve the same goal of ensuring a snug fit for your HD01 model.

How to Make Replacement Dyson Hairdryer Power Cords Fit Your HD01 Model

Understanding Polarity

Another concern that may arise during this process is the polarity of the wires. In typical electrical setups, ensuring correct polarity is crucial for safety and functionality. However, Dyson hairdryers operate differently. Unlike conventional devices, Dyson hairdryers are not polarised, meaning the orientation of the live and neutral wires doesn’t affect their operation. This flexibility allows you to join wires regardless of their colour-coding, simplifying the adaptation process. Think of a European two-pin plug that plug in the socket either way.

Practical Steps

If you find yourself in possession of a replacement cord that doesn’t align with your HD01 model, follow these steps for a hassle-free resolution:

  1. Identify the Differences: Determine how the spades and wire orientation of the replacement cord differ from those of your HD01 model.
  2. Choose Your Method: Decide whether you prefer re-terminating the new flex or modifying the hairdryer’s spades to achieve compatibility.
  3. Execute the Solution: Depending on your chosen method, either re-terminate the new flex with the old spades or file down the male spades on the hairdryer to match the replacement cord.
  4. Ignore Colour Coding: Remember that Dyson hairdryers aren’t affected by wire polarity, so don’t worry if the wire colours don’t match up perfectly. You can join blue to brown and vice versa.

How to Make Replacement Dyson Hairdryer Power Cords Fit Your HD01 Model

The Challenge of Sourcing Early HD01 Cords

It’s important to note that nobody manufactures cords specifically for the very early HD01 models. This means that even if you search elsewhere, you won’t find a suitable replacement cord readily available. Modifying the later cord is the only way to fit a new power cord, lead or flex on an HD01.

Disclaimer and Safety

Before proceeding with any modifications, it’s essential to exercise caution and prioritise safety. If you’re unsure about handling electrical components, seek assistance from a qualified electrician. Additionally, note that any modifications made are at your own risk, and the authors bear no liability for the outcomes.

While encountering compatibility issues with replacement power cords for Dyson HD01 models may initially seem daunting, a straightforward solution exists. By following the steps outlined in this article, you can adapt the replacement cord to fit your HD01 model safely and effectively, restoring functionality to your hairdryer without hassle.

If you need to buy a replacement Dyson hairdryer power cord in the UK, don’t buy from Amazon or eBay where sellers are forced to inflate prices to account for greedy 20%+ seller fees, buy direct from a Dyson specialist at a better price. The Dyson G-Force: A Rare Piece of Vacuum Cleaner History

$

We all know that Dyson is a household name in the vacuum cleaner industry, known for its cutting-edge designs and technological innovations. However, not many are aware of the origins of the brand and its very first machine, the Dyson G-Force. This rare vacuum cleaner is a significant piece of history, and Manchester Vacs proudly displays one of the few remaining examples in their head office reception.

Dyson Medic takes a deep dive into the story behind this iconic machine, highlighting its importance in the early days of Dyson’s journey.

The Birth of the G-Force

The Dyson G-Force, launched in 1991, is one of the rarest Dyson models in existence, particularly in the UK. Unlike many of Dyson’s later products, which became global sensations, the G-Force was initially sold exclusively in Japan. Known for their love for high-tech gadgets, the Japanese market proved to be an ideal location for the G-Force, which retailed at a staggering US$2,000 – an eye-watering sum now, and certainly at the time.

The G-Force displayed in Manchester Vacs’ reception is a unique imported unit from Japan, complete with the original box, manual, and belt-removal tool. It has been on display for several years, and although it has some light discolouration on the main body – which is common with older Dyson machines – its rarity and historical significance remain intact.

The Dyson G-Force

From Kleeneze Rotork Cyclon to G-Force

The G-Force has its origins in the earlier Kleeneze Rotork Cyclon, a machine produced by James Dyson in 1984 with the collaboration of Kleeneze and Zanussi. The Cyclon was Dyson’s first major vacuum invention, and it laid the foundation for the G-Force. By 1991, Dyson had refined the design, making improvements and incorporating features such as an adjustable front panel to create what became the G-Force.

Selling for US$2,000 in Japan, the G-Force was marketed to design-conscious consumers who appreciated its advanced technology. Today, these early models are highly sought after by collectors. A restored Kleeneze Rotork Cyclon recently sold for nearly £2,000, with the buyer being Dyson themselves, illustrating the enduring appeal of these early machines.

A First Run After 30 Years

Though over 30 years old, the G-Force at Manchester Vacs had never been run – until recently. For the first time, the machine was powered up, and it ran smoothly, much to everyone’s delight. Even within the collector community, very few people have ever heard a G-Force in operation, making this a rare and exciting moment.

The motor, an Italian Lamb Ametek motor, is similar to those used in later Dyson models, such as the DC01, and its performance was impressive for a machine of its age.

Design Details: Dyson’s Early Innovations

A closer inspection of the Dyson G-Force reveals design elements that would influence later Dyson models. The hose mechanism, for example, features a release system to detach the wand, a concept that evolved in later models. The tools, including a brush tool with real bristles, also offer a glimpse into the development of Dyson’s modern designs.

The bin release mechanism and the design of the bin itself closely resemble the systems used in the later DC01 model. The G-Force also features a height adjuster that activates small wheels at the back, allowing it to adapt to different floor types, a feature Dyson carried forward into future models.

The underside of the machine reveals a metal sole plate (not dissimilar to the DC15) and a wooden brush roll (actually a Vorwerk one, but we didn’t tell you that), showcasing Dyson’s early experimentation with durable materials and innovative engineering.

Display vs. Preservation

As with many vintage machines, the Dyson G-Force at Manchester Vacs faces the dilemma of display versus preservation. Its pink plastic components have discoloured slightly due to exposure to light while on display, a common issue with older plastics. Collectors often debate whether rare machines should be kept in storage to preserve their condition or displayed for public appreciation. Manchester Vacs chose to display their G-Force, allowing visitors a rare opportunity to see this important piece of vacuum cleaner history.

A Piece of Appliance History

Although the Dyson G-Force is delicate and not as durable as some of Dyson’s later models, it remains a pivotal piece in the evolution of vacuum cleaner technology. Its rarity, charm, and historical importance make it highly prized among collectors and enthusiasts. While a full floor test was avoided to preserve the machine’s delicate condition and “newness”, hearing it run for the first time in over 30 years was a remarkable experience.

For anyone interested in the roots of Dyson’s iconic brand, the G-Force is a must-see. Displayed proudly at Manchester Vacs, it stands as a testament to the innovative spirit of James Dyson that would eventually make Dyson a household name.

How Do You Measure Vacuum Cleaner Suction Power? Air Watts vs Inches of Water Lift Explained

$

0

When comparing vacuum cleaners, manufacturers often throw around technical terms like air watts, kilopascals, and even litres per second. But how do you really know how strong your vacuum is? And can you measure it yourself at home?

Here at Manchester Vacs and Dyson Medic, we test suction power using a proper analogue vacuum gauge — and we’ll explain why that matters.

Vacuum cleaner suction test gauge

What Are Air Watts?

Air watts are the vacuum industry’s preferred way of expressing cleaning performance. The number is based on both suction (pressure) and airflow — it’s calculated, not measured.

Here’s the formula:

Air Watts = (Airflow in litres/sec × Suction in kPa × 0.117)

To get an accurate air watt figure, you need to measure:

  • Suction (usually in kilopascals)
  • Airflow (in litres per second or CFM)

So, unless you’ve got lab-grade equipment, you can’t directly measure air watts, which is why nobody sells an “air watt” gauge. They don’t exist. It’s a calculated value, not a measurable one.

What We Measure: Inches of Water Lift (inH₂O)

Vacuum cleaner suction test gauge

We use a proper analogue vacuum gauge with two scales:

  • Inner ring: 0–160 inches of water lift (inH₂O)
  • Outer ring: 0–40 kilopascals (kPa)

We use the inner ring — inches of water lift — for more precise comparisons.

This tells us how strongly the vacuum can pull against a sealed surface — a good measure of raw suction. It doesn’t tell us airflow, but it gives a meaningful and repeatable number for side-by-side comparisons.

Real Suction Test Results

Here are some real figures from vacuums we’ve tested on our bench:

  • Sebo X7 (890w motor):
Typically pulls 78–84 inH₂O on our gauge
    (≈ 19.4–20.9 kPa)
  • Dyson DC14 (approx. 1600w motor):
Pulled 110 inH₂O on our gauge
    (≈ 27.5 kPa)

These are real, practical measurements — not marketing numbers. The Sebo performs impressively well given its lower wattage, which speaks to efficient airflow design.

Why Can’t We Test Cordless Dysons?

Many modern Dyson cordless machines (like the V8, V10, V15, etc.) can’t be reliably tested with this type of gauge. That’s because they’re designed to detect a blocked airway, and when you attach a sealed gauge, the machine treats it as a blockage and immediately starts pulsing or shutting down.

So while some cordless vacuums may feel powerful in use, they’re simply not compatible with proper sealed suction testing like this. That’s a design choice, not a limitation of the gauge.

Can I Test My Vacuum?

Yes — with the same vacuum suction gauge we use, you can test your vacuum cleaner at home. It’s ideal for:

  • Checking performance after repairs or servicing
  • Comparing different machines side by side
  • Spotting loss of suction over time

We supply the Marshall Town vacuum gauge — a specialist, USA-imported analogue unit that’s ideal for vacuum cleaner testing.

Learn more and buy

Final Thoughts

Air watts are fine in theory, but you can’t measure them without airflow data. What you can measure is sealed suction, and that’s what this gauge does. It won’t give you marketing numbers — it gives you real ones.

If you’re serious about knowing how your vacuum performs, or you want to check whether it’s working as it should, this gauge is a simple, reliable tool to have on hand.

Tool Adaptors for the Dyson UP22, UP24, UP32 and UP34

$
0
0

You have a Dyson UP22, UP24, UP32 and UP34 and you want a tool adaptor?

We have them. But be sure you are buying the correct one – not all Dyson red button tools are the same! If you have a mains powered Dyson that uses tools with a red button, this article is for you.

We have written here before to try and demystify the confusion with Dyson tool socket fittings and adaptors.

Here is one previous article: Dyson V8 tool adaptors: Use your old tools with your Dyson V7 and V8 (if you have a cordless V7, V8, V10, V12 or V15 – read that instead).

Dyson have a habit of changing tool sockets quite frequently. Ostensibly to deny owners of tools belonging to other Dyson vacuums the ability to use them across several models or use old tools with newer machines.

We assume this is to make you dash out and buy a glut of new tools, of course.

However, the more savvy person actually goes in search of a tool adaptor. Dyson make the odd adaptor, and the after-market usually makes the ones they don’t.

Dyson’s latest tool socket comes with a red button on the tools, known as a “quick release” type. (Personally, I never found the older ones slow to release, but I digress…..)

This red button tool design was first used on the cordless V8 (and V7) ranges, but they kept the idea on the later CY22 and CY23 Big Ball cylinder machines and some of the later Ball machines known as “Light” ball, “Big” ball, but are actually UP22, UP24, UP32 and UP34. And at first glance the fittings all seem the same, but they’re not. Cordless ones are smaller than mains-powered ones.

However, with Dyson’s historical tendency to make tool sockets differ to inconvenience you as much as possible, what they have done is made the identical fitting in two different sizes.

Dyson Red Button Tool Adaptors

Now isn’t that jolly?

The smaller one is for the V8 and V7 cordless machines. The larger one is for your “Light” ball, “Big” ball, UP22, UP24, UP32 and UP34.

Here they are from another angle:

Dyson Red Button Tool Adaptors

On the left is a UP22, UP24, UP32 and UP34 adaptor, and on the right is a V7-V15 adaptor.

Confusing stuff if you are shopping for adaptors, yes? Be SURE to read the sales listings in detail. And remember, nobody makes adaptors to allow electrically driven floor heads to interchange between types, so don’t bother looking for those.

So what about the “Light” ball, “Big” ball, UP22, UP24, UP32 and UP34 or other non-V7/V8 red button tool using Dyson owner who wants to use all his or her old Dyson tools with their new Dyson? What if you have the old DC01-DC14 32mm tools, or want to suck air from vacuum bags, etc.? Dyson will tell you that you cannot do that as the correct adaptors don’t exist.

Well they do. If you have a “Light” ball, “Big” ball, UP22, UP24, UP32 or UP34 and want the best cross model compatibility you want this set:

Dyson CY22, CY23, Light Ball, Big Ball tool adaptors

If you want adaptability for your Dyson CY22/CY23/Light Ball/Big Ball Cinetic (not V7/V8) red button tool versions with old DC01-DC14 32mm tools, or want to suck air from vacuum bags, etc., you want the set above.

You can find that set on Amazon >>here<<, eBay >>here<< and on Manchester Vacs >>here<<.

Confused? If so, use the comment box below to ask questions.

After taking it in on a Wednesday they did some diagnostic checks and I needed a main motor body and cyclone assembly and a new filter. Is the Dyson DC14 Still Worth Repairing?

Is the Dyson DC14 Still Worth Repairing?

The Dyson DC14 was launched in 2004, following the hugely successful DC07. It wasn’t a complete redesign, but a smart evolution. First came the DC04, then a facelifted DC07 — and finally, the DC14, which built on the same reliable mechanical foundation. Our old review here from 2011 got it right. That alone tells you something: Dyson got it right early on.

Dyson DC14 being tested

But nearly 20 years later, is the DC14 still worth repairing? At Dyson Medic, we say yes — absolutely. Here’s why.

Dyson DC14: The Last of the “Proper” Dysons

Many Dyson engineers and enthusiasts consider the DC14 to be the last of the proper Dysons — machines built to last, made to be serviced, and free from needless gimmicks. Back then, Dyson was more focused on engineering than marketing jargon.

The DC14 uses improved Root 8 cyclone technology, designed to maintain constant suction without a bag. It came in several variants, including the standard Multi Floor, All Floors, Animal, and Allergy models — and it outsold the later Ball models like the DC15 by some margin.

Dyson DC14 Repairs

Still a Solid Performer

The DC14 still performs brilliantly. It has strong suction, a large bin, and a traditional corded design, meaning you can vacuum your entire house without stopping to charge a battery.

Many modern Dysons may look sleeker, but they often lack the raw power of a well-maintained DC14. If you’re tired of cordless machines cutting out mid-clean, the DC14 is a refreshing return to practicality.

All Spare Parts Are Still Available

Although long discontinued by Dyson, spares for the DC14 are still widely available. We stock hundreds of parts — both genuine and high-quality aftermarket — covering everything from filters to motors.

  • Pre-motor and post-motor filters
  • Belts, brushrolls, and soleplates
  • Clutch assemblies and motors
  • Wand handles, tools, and hoses
  • Bins, cyclones, and clips

If Dyson told you something’s no longer available, check our site instead. We often manufacture or source rare parts ourselves.

Easy to Repair at Home

The DC14 was made during an era when vacuums were designed to be serviced. No sealed units. No glue. No built-in obsolescence. You don’t need special tools — just a T15 Torx screwdriver and a bit of patience.

It’s a favourite among DIYers for that very reason. Common repairs include:

  • Changing a clutch or belt
  • Replacing a brushroll
  • Cleaning or swapping filters
  • Removing blockages
  • Fitting a new motor or power cord

We also provide free stripdown guides and repair videos to help you do the job properly.

Often Better Than Buying a New Vacuum

Repairing a DC14 often costs far less than buying a new machine — and the result is usually a better vacuum. We’ve serviced DC14s that are still going strong after nearly two decades. How many newer Dysons will you be able to say that about?

Dyson DC14 Spare Parts and Repair

The Dyson DC14 Legacy

The DC14’s design proved so good that Dyson kept using it. Later models like the DC17, DC27, and DC33 are essentially the same machine under a slightly different shell. This cross-compatibility means parts remain widely available and easy to source, even today.

This shared design across multiple models also makes it easier for engineers, DIYers, and parts suppliers to continue supporting the DC14 — yet another reason it’s still worth repairing.

Conclusion: Repair Your Dyson DC14, Don’t Bin It

If you’ve got a Dyson DC14 that’s not working like it used to, don’t throw it out. It’s one of Dyson’s most solid, reliable, and repairable machines. With spare parts readily available and servicing being straightforward, there’s every reason to keep it going.

Whether you want to bring it in for a service, buy the parts yourself, or get some free advice from our forums, we’re here to help.

What to Do With Your Old Dyson or Sebo Vacuum? Let Us Recycle It

Got an old Dyson or Sebo gathering dust in the loft, or sitting dead under the stairs? Don’t chuck it down the tip just yet — there’s a better option.

At Manchester Vacs, we offer a proper recycling service for Dyson and Sebo vacuum cleaners, including cordless models, Airwraps, Supersonic hair dryers, and even things like Dyson fans, heaters and washing machines. Dead or alive, we’ll take them — and give them a second life where possible.

Recycle Your Old Dyson or Sebo Vacuum Cleaner – Here’s How

Recycling a Dyson: Live Locally? We’ll Even Pick It Up

If you’re in Stockport, Manchester, Tameside or surrounding areas, we’ll collect your old Dyson or Sebo vacuum for free. If you’d rather drop it off, bring it to our workshop in Bredbury and we’ll handle the rest — no fuss.

Further Afield and Want to Recycle a Dyson? No Problem

If you’ve got a small Dyson item (like a cordless vacuum, hair dryer or Airwrap) and you’re elsewhere in the UK, we’ll arrange courier collection — and we’ll even cover the cost. Just pack it up, send us an email, and we’ll do the rest. That’s proper service.

What Happens to My Old Dyson?

Unlike the local tip, we don’t just crush and bin everything. We strip machines down, clean usable parts, and reuse them to repair or refurbish other Dysons and Sebos. Anything we can’t reuse is recycled properly, including motors, cables, and plastics.

It’s not just good for the planet — it keeps parts in circulation for the future, helps other customers keep their machines going, and saves waste.

“If it’s Dyson or Sebo, and it’s dead, we’ll probably want it. Even if it looks beyond help.”

Doing Our Bit (and Yours)

Over your lifetime, you’ll throw away more than three tonnes of electrical items. That’s a shocking number. But recycling your old Dyson or Sebo with us is one small way to reduce it, and give your old machine a better ending than the back of a bin lorry.

If you want to see how it all works, and check if your area qualifies for free collection, our full info page is here: Dyson & Sebo Recycling.

Battery Problems on Dyson Cordless Models?

Cordless Dysons are great when they work – but they’re not all created equal. If you own a V6, V7, V8, V10, V11 or even a newer V15 and it’s not holding charge, we can help.

We stock high-performance batteries that are better than many of the cheap ones you’ll find on Amazon or eBay. Ours are built to a higher spec, last longer, and have a low failure rate. We’ve worked with the same battery supplier for years, and we don’t sell junk.

We also carry filters, chargers, trigger mechanisms, cyclone assemblies, and more for all the popular cordless models.

We Also Repair Classic Dyson Models

Still got a DC14, DC25 or DC40 that’s misbehaving? We repair those too. In fact, we have parts for Dyson models that even Dyson themselves no longer support.

Whether it’s a DC33 not picking up properly or a DC41 with brushroll problems, we’ve seen it before – and we know how to fix it efficiently and affordably.

Dyson Hairdryer or AirWrap Cable Problems?

If you have a Dyson hair dryer or AirWrap, the cables are known to fail on them causing intermittent or total loss of power. We keep our own cables in for these, so if your Dyson hair dryer or AirWrap is cutting out, pop it in and let us take a look for you.

What About the Small Local Repair Shop?

Dyson Repairs, Service & Spare Parts in Cheadle and Gatley

You sometimes see small local shops offering to fix Dysons next to the key-cutting machine or the paintbrush display. We’re not one of those places.

We’re in a proper industrial unit with a car park, toilets, and even air conditioning for the few days a year when we need it. Our techs work on Dysons every day. We don’t dabble. We specialise.

We differ from your local corner repair (cum hardware) shop in several ways. Our technicians fix Dyson vacuums all day every day. Aside from Sebo repairs, Dyson is pretty much all we do. We don’t fix Hoover, Miele, Shark or Gtech if we can help it. We won’t fix your lawnmower, hair straightener, or toaster either. We don’t cut keys, sell you a tin of creosote or a lawn feed. You’re probably familiar with the phrase, “Jack of all trades, master of none”. We’re the place some local repair shops quietly bring people’s Dysons to when they can’t work out the problem.

Avoid At-Home Repairs – Here’s Why

Someone offering to strip your Dyson down in your front room might sound convenient. But is he likely to have all the spares in his van? What if halfway through the repair he tells you it’s going to cost “a lot more” and your vacuum is already in pieces?

We’ve heard plenty of horror stories on our Dyson advice forums. You’re far better off bringing it to us. Our engineers are experienced, we’ve got every part we’re likely to need already in stock, and we’ll call you with a fair quote before doing anything major.

Don’t risk a cowboy repair. We’re 15 minutes from Cheadle or Gatley and we do it properly.

Mancheter Vacs Dyson Repairs

We’re not new to this. With over 220 Google reviews, most five stars, people travel from all over Greater Manchester and Cheshire to get their Dysons fixed by us.

We have replaced parts before with the help of YouTube tutorials, however our Dyson DC50 needed a change over valve hose replacement and it looked complicated and a risk of doing more damage if done incorrectly so we contacted Manchester Vacs. They quoted almost 50% cheaper than another repair shop we called and had the job done and vacuum ready to collect in under 24 hours. The shop is also easy to get to by car being close to the M60. The vacuum cleaner is now working better than before the problem started. The staff were friendly and helpful. 100% would go back again and would recommend to family and friends. – Jennifer Barrett on Google

When the BBC want some vacuum expertise they ask us. When ex-cabinet ministers want a Sebo vacuum cleaner, they come to us. When ITV want a Sebo vacuum cleaner for Coronation St, they get it from us. When Gordon Burns from the Krypton Factor wants his vacuum repaired, he comes to us. Even Gatley Tandoori is one of our customers!

Dyson DC25 Spare Parts and DIY Repair Advice – Keep Yours Going Properly

The Dyson DC25 is one of the classic Dyson Ball upright vacuums. They first came out in 2008 and were once a very familiar sight in homes across the UK. It’s now often overlooked in favour of newer models. But don’t be too quick to write it off. The DC25 is still a well-designed, robust machine, and more importantly, it’s one that’s easy to keep going with the right parts and a bit of practical know-how.

At Manchester Vacs and Dyson Medic, we’re often asked whether the DC25 is still worth repairing. The answer is yes, especially if you already own one. With decent build quality and a wide range of spares still available, the DC25 remains one of the best models for DIY maintenance and long-term reliability.

Dyson DC25

What Makes the Dyson DC25 Worth Keeping?

The DC25 sits just above the smaller DC24 in Dyson’s early Ball vacuum range. It’s lightweight for an upright, easy to steer, and relatively simple to work on. Unlike many of the newer cordless models, the DC25 was built with longevity in mind.

We still recondition the occasional DC25 in our workshop. When we can get a good one in, it’s worth refurbishing, and we wouldn’t waste time on a model that wasn’t fit for purpose.

Dyson DC25 Spare Parts: What You Can Still Buy

Spare parts for the Dyson DC25 are still widely available, and we stock almost everything you’d need to keep one running.

Here’s what’s commonly replaced and what we stock:

  • Brushroll motors for the cleaner head
  • Post-filters — we avoid the poorly made ones with weak clips that cause clunking in the Ball
  • Ball motors — usually very reliable, but we carry tested recycled ones just in case
  • Power cables — the ones we stock are specially made with the correct terminals, unlike generic trade versions
  • Wiring looms for the head — Dyson stopped making these, so we had our own manufactured
  • Cyclone seals, soleplates, wand parts, tools, and more

Even though Dyson no longer makes the full cleaner head as a complete unit, all the internal parts — including the motor, brushroll, belt assembly and housing components — are available individually, so you can repair the one you have.

We also carry exclusive parts made to our own specification where the official supply has dried up. That includes loom kits, power cable assemblies, and more. Our video below will give you a good overview on the viability of fixing a DC25.

What Commonly Goes Wrong on a DC25?

Like any vacuum of its age, the DC25 has a few common failure points. Thankfully, most of them are easy to fix at home.

Here’s what we see most often:

  • Clunking noise from the Ball, often caused by poor-quality post-filters popping out due to weak clips
  • Brushroll not spinning, usually because the brushroll motor or wiring loom has failed
  • No power to the head, often due to a faulty loom (we sell a replacement)
  • Frayed or damaged mains cable, especially near the handle
  • Loss of suction, often caused by blocked internal ducts, clogged filters, or poorly fitting seals

Every single one of these faults is repairable with parts we keep in stock. In most cases, the fix is straightforward if you have basic tools, practical skills and a bit of patience.

Avoid Cheap Copy Parts

If you’re browsing eBay or Amazon for DC25 spares, beware of those sellers we call the usual suspects. You’ll find plenty of cheap Chinese parts that are poorly made, don’t fit correctly, or fail within weeks.

The worst offenders are:

  • Post-filters with weak or misaligned clips
  • Generic loom kits that don’t terminate correctly
  • “Universal” mains cables with the wrong connectors
  • Copy brushroll motors with alignment or overheating issues – sometimes the ends melt and seize up the head

We’ve seen the damage caused by these parts and it’s never worth the saving. That’s why we either source original Dyson stock, well-made aftermarket spares we use in our own Dyson repair workshop or have improved replacements made ourselves. If we wouldn’t use it in a reconditioned machine in our workshop, we won’t sell it.

Want to Fix It Yourself? You Can

The DC25 is a great machine to learn on if you’re new to Dyson repairs. It’s relatively modular, with most of the key parts accessible without specialist tools.

And the good news is that you’re not alone. We host a detailed strip-down guide on our forum, posted by one of our long-standing contributors, Sam Watson (Beko1987). It includes step-by-step photos and even embedded videos.

You’ll find it here: DC25 strip down tutorial

If you’re stuck or unsure, ask us on the forum or in the comments below. We’re happy to help. It’s the same place our customers have been coming to for advice for nearly two decades.

Conclusion: Still a Solid Vacuum With the Right Parts

If you’ve got a Dyson DC25 in decent condition, there’s no reason to throw it away. It’s a perfectly good vacuum that can be kept going without much cost. And if you’re thinking of buying a second-hand one to repair, it’s one of the better models to work on.

Avoid the quick-fix sellers on Marketplace and eBay. Use quality parts, take the time to do the job properly, and your DC25 will keep working for years yet.
